I have blogged before about quilting with alternative textures. I think it’s just fantastic. After all, our founding mothers of quilting did it all the time. It is in the real spirit of quilting. I had a quilting instructor early in my quilting years that said never to use anything but 100% cotton. I remember at that time thinking “What a strange thing to say”. I remember thinking that she was all wrong. And I still think that. It’s so much more fun to use all the tactile-licious fabrics that are out there. Think about it–minky, silk, corduroy, flannel, lawns, linens, chambrays…the list goes on and on.
Now, recently, modern quilters have claimed that quilting with alternative textures is something new for the modern quilt movement. I say no, it’s not. They are just bringing it back again. I’m a modern quilter, but let me assure you that I was using many an alternative texture for many years. I love that the modern quilters have started using linens. We carry linens at the Bungalow. We also carried Chambray but we’re currently sold out of that. I love the alternative textures.
Ann Huoang, one of my favorite customers did just that recently. She brought in this table runner that she made. It is made out of old Kimonos! The fabric content wasn’t labeled, but I would bet dollars to donuts, this is real silk. It is so beautiful. Ann has a great sense of humor and a great laugh. She’s one of the most creative people that I have ever met. Here’s her project.
