Today we had our Soup Starter Event. Have you ever purchased a soup starter at the grocery store? It just provides the herbs and seasonings and the ingredients that get you started. Well, that was the meaning behind our Soup Starter Day. And, oh, did we have fun. Everyone had a bowl of delicious baked potato soup with a warm bisquit and a glass of wine. Then, we had fun showing fabric collections. We worked hard at assembling fat quarter combinations that brought out the best of our fabrics. We were able to showcase fabrics in such a unique way. We combined the fabrics across multiple lines. For example:
This grouping has a fat quarters from Moda, Cloud 9 Organics and Free Spirit. Look at how great they look together. Why do they go so well? It has as much to do with intensity as it does color. Look at the print scales. They are varied. Also, the grouping isn’t boring because it has been taken across multiple lines from multiple artists. The large scale of the Tula Pink Butterfly fabric sets off the smaller scale prints from Cloud 9. But that’s not all. Look at the one on the far left from Moda. The fan fold appearance of the print mimics the wings in the butterflies. Sometimes bringing a theme across and repetition of a design element is even as important as color.

The colors are all right. But, there’s something kind of unexpected in this group. The map fabric is different. The theme is african animals, and so the map was fun to put in. The fabrics are from Quilting Treasures, Windham, Cloud 9 Organics, and Birch Organics. It’s a fun group and has a more masculine feel to it.
I liked this happy grouping. It took a lot of work. The gemstone fabric is from Lizzy House for Andover. It was a hard one to match. It is under-appreciated in the shop. I love it and think it’s fun, but you definitely have to work to find coordinates. Sure, you could just pull the coordinates that go with it off the shelf, but what’s the fun in that? Plus, when you do that you end up with a quilt that people won’t look at for more than a few seconds, because the combinations are safe and expected. So, I went with the elliptical shaped one from Camelot Cottons. It has all the right colors. Then, I added the pale yellow with the metallic because it duplicates the gemstone feel. I added a gray Kona Cotton to tone it down some. It sure was fun.
So, for this one, I also will stress the repetition of theme. The theme is feathers. The one on the far left has fine lines feathered out from the center. The little tiny gray triangles in the center pink piece looks Native American and therefore goes well with the feathers.
Game Night! This would make a great table runner for a game night or individual table napkins for a dinner before game night. Not only are the colors well matched but the theme is great.
We had a total of 25 different combinations. It was fun. The day was cold and cloudy, foggy actually. So, the soup was perfect. What a great day to be indoors. We certainly made the sun shine indoors!
