I love Halloween. Yes, I always have a black cat. I am particularly fond of them. My favorite color is orange. So, does it not make sense that Halloween is one of my favorite holidays?
Recently I received a phone call from a woman asking me to vend at her guild’s quilt show. I asked her what the date was. She told me that it was October 31st and November 1st. We were to set up on October 30th. I knew this would sound strange, but I went ahead and said it anyway. “But that’s Halloween!” I exclaimed. Now, there’s no secret that I am over 50. My children are grown and gone. There was a long pause at the other end. I half expected her to say “well we’ll give you candy if that’s what you want.” But, she didn’t. I don’t think she knew what to say. So I told her that I would get back to her.
I called my sister and told her about the conversation, because I was starting to feel slightly immature for my comment. When I started to tell her what dates the show was on she exclaimed, with no prompting (she didn’t miss a beat) “But that’s Halloween!” “And you have a black cat!” I rest my case.
Maybe everyone loves Halloween because it’s an excuse to buy orange fabric. Why do we need an excuse? People are afraid to say how much they like orange. They fear orange. They don’t use it in their quilts because they fear that it will be a mistake. It’s not a mistake. I love orange. It’s the color of sunshine, and if happiness would have a color it would be orange.
So, I say, embrace your inner orange. Don’t be afraid to buy it year round!
